Square setup (optional)

Optional: connect Square for in-store payment earn into your Shopify balance. See the reference section below for how this differs from Square Loyalty (Customer Display).

Implementation steps

  1. Choose your path: (A) SamePoints for one Shopify + Square balance, or (B) Square Loyalty for Customer Display sign-in/points on the secondary screen. Do not subscribe to both — same payment can earn twice.
  2. If using SamePoints: do not subscribe to Square Loyalty. Customer Display remains a checkout screen only; enable Rewards launcher / wallet on your Shopify theme for customers to see balance.
  3. In SamePoints → Settings, click Connect Square and approve permissions on Square.
  4. No per-store webhook URL — SamePoints uses one OAuth app for all merchants.
  5. Capture customer phone or email at the counter when possible so in-store payments match Shopify profiles.
  6. After connecting, run a test in-store payment and check Logs for payment.updated.
  7. Migrating from Square Loyalty: see Help FAQ or /docs/square-setup — Square has no points CSV export; use Import after calling Square Support.
  8. If the same person has two profiles (Square-only + Shopify), use Customers → select both → Merge profiles.
  9. Show balances on your storefront with the theme wallet / Rewards launcher (see Theme wallet doc).
  10. If Connect Square is unavailable, contact support (server Square OAuth env vars).

Reference

Square in-store: SamePoints sync vs Square Loyalty

Square Customer Display can show loyalty sign-in and points only when you subscribe to Square Loyalty — that UI is internal to Square and third-party apps cannot use it. SamePoints unifies Shopify + Square payments into one balance on Shopify; your in-store secondary screen stays a checkout display, not a SamePoints points board.

Do not run both programs on the same store

If Square Loyalty is subscribed, Square and SamePoints can both award points on the same in-store payment. Turn off Square Loyalty in Square Dashboard before relying on SamePoints.

Shopify + Square one balance

SamePoints (Shopify + Square one balance)

Pros

  • One points balance in SamePoints and on Shopify (metafield + theme wallet / Rewards launcher)
  • Earns on Shopify paid orders and Square completed payments — one accurate ledger
  • Optional Shopify gift cards at your threshold
  • Keep Square POS, Register, Terminal, and Customer Display for payments — no change to checkout hardware

Cons

  • Customer Display will not show SamePoints balance or sign-in — Square does not open that screen to outside apps
  • In-store customers see points on your Shopify rewards page / theme launcher (phone or after online login), not on the Square secondary display
  • Staff should capture phone or email at the counter so Square payments match the right profile

Square Loyalty (native POS + Customer Display UI)

Pros

  • Loyalty sign-in and points/rewards on Customer Display, Register, and Square POS (requires Square Loyalty subscription)
  • Phone check-in, SMS updates, Cash App / wallet pass — all inside Square’s product
  • Staff redeem rewards at the till without leaving Square

Cons

  • Points live in Square’s program — they do not sync to Shopify metafields or SamePoints automatically
  • Shopify online shoppers need a separate bridge; hybrid stores often end up with two balances
  • Cannot run alongside SamePoints without double earning on the same Square payment

About Customer Display

Loyalty on Customer Display (check-in screen, points messaging) requires Square Dashboard → Loyalty subscription and POS Settings → Loyalty toggles. SamePoints does not replace that screen.
