Layer by layer matrix showing which parts of Square and Shopify can be integrated and which cannot

Short answer: Partly. Some layers integrate cleanly, one is impossible, and the rest depend on tooling. "Can you integrate Square with Shopify" has no single yes or no, because six different things get called integration — and the answer flips depending on which one you mean.

Here is the whole picture in one table, then the detail on each row.

The integration matrix

Layer Integrated? How
Payments / checkout No Square is not a Shopify gateway, and no app adds it
Products and catalog Yes Connector apps, one direction
Inventory / stock Yes Same connectors; pick one source of truth
Customers Partly Records sync; identity matching is on you
Loyalty points Yes Payment-webhook ledger across both rails
Gift cards No Separate, non-interchangeable systems
Reporting Partly Export both, or use a BI tool

The rows people search for most are the two that cannot be done: payments and gift cards. That is worth knowing before you start.

Payments: no, and it is not coming

You cannot process Shopify online checkout through Square, and you cannot use a Square Reader with Shopify POS. Square does not appear on Shopify's payment provider list.

The reason is commercial rather than technical: Square Online competes with Shopify, and Shopify POS competes with Square. Neither will hand the other its checkout.

Full detail, including the fee traps: how to connect Square to Shopify for payments.

Products and inventory: yes, with one rule

Connector apps in the Shopify App Store sync products and stock levels between the two platforms. This works well, with one condition: sync one direction only.

Nominate one system as the source of truth — usually Shopify for the richer product data, sometimes Square if staff add items at the counter — and push from there. Two systems writing the same stock number will drift, and the drift surfaces as an oversell.

Match your SKUs before enabling anything. Connectors match on SKU, and a mismatch quietly creates duplicate products instead of raising an error.

Customers: records yes, identity no

Customer records can move between the platforms, but that is not the same as knowing that Square customer #4821 and Shopify customer jane@example.com are the same person.

The platforms capture different keys:

  • Shopify checkout captures email.
  • Square in-person captures phone number, if your staff ask.

Nothing reconciles these automatically. If staff skip the phone prompt, that sale is anonymous and permanently unmatchable. This is the single highest-leverage habit in a hybrid store — see why phone capture matters, and merging duplicates if it is already too late.

Loyalty: yes, but not the way most people try

This is the layer that most needs to cross both platforms, and the one where the obvious approach fails.

What does not work: running Square Loyalty alongside a Shopify loyalty app. Square Loyalty does not sync to Shopify — there is no toggle for it in either dashboard. You end up with two balances for one customer. We wrote this up in detail: does Square Loyalty sync with Shopify.

What does work: a single ledger listening to payment events on both rails — Shopify orders/paid webhooks and Square payment and refund webhooks. Both platforms emit these regardless of gateway, which is why the loyalty layer does not care that payments are not integrated.

The tradeoff: Square Loyalty must be off, or both systems award on the same sale. Balances then display on your Shopify storefront rather than the Square Customer Display, because Square does not open that screen to third-party apps.

Gift cards: separate systems

Shopify gift cards and Square gift cards are independent. A Shopify gift card will not redeem at a Square terminal, and vice versa. There is no bridge.

This matters for reward design. If your loyalty program issues Shopify gift cards, they are an online reward. Redeeming rewards in store means either a manual staff process or accepting that rewards are website-only. Worth deciding deliberately: gift cards vs discount codes.

Reporting: partly

Neither platform shows total revenue for a customer who shops both channels. Square reports Square sales, Shopify reports Shopify sales.

Options, in ascending order of effort: export both to a spreadsheet; pipe both into a BI tool; or derive it from whatever unified layer you already run — a loyalty ledger that sees both rails already holds cross-channel spend per customer.

So what should you actually integrate?

Work backwards from the symptom:

Your problem The layer to fix
"I oversold an item" Inventory sync, one direction
"Customers say their points are missing" Loyalty ledger across both rails
"The same customer is in my system twice" Identity capture at the counter
"I want Square to process my website" Not possible — reconsider the requirement
"I cannot see who my best customers are" Reporting export or unified ledger

Most merchants arrive searching for payments integration and leave having fixed loyalty and identity, because that is where the customer-visible damage actually was.

Setting this up from scratch: how to use Square with Shopify walks through the build order.

What is SamePoints?

SamePoints integrates the loyalty layer specifically. It listens to Shopify order webhooks and Square payment and refund webhooks, applies the same earn and refund rules to both, keeps one immutable ledger, and syncs balances to Shopify customer metafields for display on your storefront. It requires no shared payment gateway and no Square Loyalty subscription — Square Loyalty should be off. Customers claim Shopify gift cards from the storefront launcher once they reach your threshold.

FAQ

Can you integrate Square with Shopify?

Partly. Products, inventory and loyalty can be integrated. Payments and gift cards cannot. Customer records can sync, but matching the same person across both platforms depends on capturing a shared key such as a phone number.

Is there an official Square app for Shopify?

There is no official Square-built integration that connects Square payments to Shopify checkout. Third-party connector apps in the Shopify App Store handle catalog and inventory sync, and specialised apps handle loyalty.

Can Square and Shopify share inventory?

Yes, through connector apps. Choose one platform as the source of truth and sync one direction. Two-way sync on the same SKUs causes stock drift and overselling.

Can a customer use a Shopify gift card at my Square terminal?

No. Shopify and Square gift cards are separate systems with no interoperability. If your rewards are Shopify gift cards, they redeem online only unless staff handle it manually.

Do I need to integrate payments before I can unify loyalty?

No. A loyalty ledger listens to payment events from each platform independently. Both Shopify and Square emit webhooks when money moves, which is all that is required — the gateway question is unrelated.

What is the hardest part of integrating Square and Shopify?

Customer identity. Every other layer is a configuration problem with a known answer. Matching an in-store shopper to their online account depends on staff asking for a phone number at the counter, every time, and no software can fix a sale that was recorded anonymously.
